Is Pennsylvania Mayor Wally Scott a hero?
Have you ever heard of Reading, Pennsylvania? Yeah – me neither…. but then I came across this article on the internet about a man named Wally Scott.
So, what makes Wally Scott so special?
Well – apparently he’s capable of putting his foot down and following the law when others want to disregard it.
You see – Mayor Wally decided that flying the rainbow flag which symbolizes the LGBTQ movement is not okay for his city of 90,000 residents.
Did he make the right decision?
According to City council president Jeffrey Waltman the mayor “has concerns for flying a flag for one specific cause because it could raise questions. The may stated that he supports the group, the cause – but had concerns about raising the flag.”
Fair enough.
Then managing director Osmer Deming piped in: “The mayor’s position is that he does not support flags being up that support political movements and he views that (flag) as a political movement.”

Reading Pennsylvania Mayor Wally Scott
Mayor Wally Scott was born and raised in Reading, Pennsylvania. He lived at the former Saint Francis Orphanage, which is now Alvernia University, from 1951 to 1958. In 1969 he graduated from Reading High School and continued to pursue his education at Reading Area Community College and Penn State Berks. His love of education drove him to revisit his educational goals years later, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Administration Justice, with honors, from Mountain State University in West Virginia in 2006.
Mayor Scott has always held a high regard for family, community and equality. He began serving the citizens of the City of Reading in 1979, as a member of the Reading School Board. He served for 3 years, before he decided to run for District Judge. In 1982, he was elected as District Judge and began his fight for the rights of children and families within the judicial system, handling up to 15,000 cases a year. It was his continued desire to help the people of the City of Reading, and the City in general, that motivated him to run for Mayor.
With a campaign message promising positive change, the citizens of the City of Reading elected Mayor Scott to its top position in November 2015, with his swearing in occurring on January 4, 2016. As the People’s Mayor, his goal is to create a government that serves the people, not rules them; a government that lifts its citizens, not pushes and hurts them. A government that treats all people it serves with dignity and respect.
His motto throughout life has been “…to live every day like it is your last, because, in the end, it does not matter who you are or who you think you are, we are all humbled before God. Let us judge each other a little less and love each other a little more.”
Mayor Scott is also the father of three daughters; Tara, Ashley and Kyley, and grandfather to eight grandchildren.
Reading Pennsylvania Mayor Wally Scott understands city policy
There may be some who are angered about the Mayor’s actions, but why?
I mean – think about it…
What if there was a few members of a Satanic group that wanted to hang a flag of Satan? Or Pittsburgh Steeler fans that wanted to hang a flag of the Steelers? The list goes on and on and on …
Flags are symbols. Symbols are powerful and by not allowing a small group to fly a flag on city propery, Mayor Wally Scott followed the law.
Imagine that.
